Lourdes Trip

Cavan CYMS are sending two invalids to Lourdes on the first Kilmore Diocesan Pilgrimage organised by local man John McGinnity which commences for five days on May 30th 1972. Last year Kilmore travelled with the Meath Dioceses but already this year John has booked 306 pilgrims  including forty invalids.

Meeting

Cavan CYMS are holding a special meeting in the Hut to explore the possibility of sending two invalids to Lourdes on the  forthcoming first Kilmore Diocesan Pilgrimage to Lourdes.

Presentation of Trophies

Father Des O Dowd presented the senior and junior snooker trophies at Cavan CYMS to Hubert Smith Runner up Junior Snooker Peter Walsh Junior Champion Patrick Kane Senior Champ Gerry Higgins Runner Up Senior competition and Paddy O Reilly Chairman Cavan CYMS.

Death of James Farrell

Death of the very well known highly popular James Farrell Military Row at his residence at the age of 81. Tailor by trade he was a well known figure in Cavan town having his dress making shop adjacent to the Farham Hotel behind Tom McConville’s Hair Salon. He was a native of Caledon county Tyrone. He was an active member of many of the organisations in the town both church and state and was a prominent member of Cavan Slashers a founding member of Cavan CYMS as well as serving in Saint Vincent De Paul and the Old Confraternity in the Cathedral. He was in business at the Farham Hotel from 1919-1960 when he retired. He was a master tailor and most amusing and respected resident who was known and respected over a very wide area. He is survived by his wife Rose nee Donoghue College Street two sons Paddy Solicitor in Naas  Desmond Dublin three daughters Mrs S O Brien Coventry England Mrs G McGlone Glasgow and Mrs J Farrelly Dublin. There was a very large and representative attendance at the removal and funeral from Saint Patrick and Saint Phelim’s Cathedral Cavan to Saint Brigid’s Cemetery in Killygarry. Father Des O Dowd officiated.

CYMS Men’s Table Tennis Final

Mickey Breslin (Scratch) beats Vincent O Connor ( Scratch) in the CYMS men’s table tennis final 21-12 21-16 while Monica Fay beats Mary Beirne in three sets to win the Ladie’s.14-21,21-15,21-17.

News Update

Cavan Social Services host the local old folks in CYMS each Tuesday and Friday afternoons. They play cards or read the paper or just chat over a cup of tea and a biscuit. Different organisations take turns of playing host.

Tidy Town

Analysis of Cavan Tidy Town’s report make sober reading Effort 23 out of possible 35 Absence of Litter 10 out of 20 condition of streets sidewalks and open spaces 10 out of 15 condition of hedges paths etc on approach roads 6 out of 10 appearance of premises 12 out of 15 planting gardens trees shrubs and flowers 11 out of 15 colour and colour harmony 7 out of 10 absence of unsightly objects 6 out of ten. Total 96 out of 150. The judges remarked on the lack of public support for the Tidy Towns Committee the profusion of litter derelict sites the amount of weeds  defacement of poles with Showband Posters and the condition of the grassy bank on the left on Virginia Road. Praise was lavished for the outstanding appearance of the Cathedral the Courthouse Oakvale Filling Station and the Rose Garden beside Cavan CYMS.
